Taro

Taro, also known as Elephant Ears are the perfect summer water plant. They are originally from the Asia tropics so they can handle the high humid, heat of Missouri Augusts. These plants, however, are not fans of full sun (but who is?) as they will thrive and get bigger if they are not exposed to the afternoon sun. Taro plants can reach a height of 2-6 feet and a width of 2-4 feet. As you probably know these plants have giant elephant ear leaves, which gives your water feature the perfect hint of the tropics. These plants also make a great backdrop for other water plants.  Taro plants come in many different colors. There is the black leaved ones, known as 'Black Magic', variegated leaves, red stemmed ones, and then the plain green and others. Nature's Beauty Watergardens has all of these available now so hurry in while supplies last.

Large Sarassa

Sarassas bring a beautiful pop of red to your water garden. They have a dazzling white base with deep lipstick red spots on them. It is like looking at little rubies in your water garden.  A great thing about these fish is that as they grow in size and age their red spots stay the same brilliant red. Which is why these are the perfect fish to have in a larger size because not only will the become the stars of your water feature, they will also have the same bright coloring. Sarassas have a very similar body shape as shubunkins and comets so they will look great together in a water garden. Nature's Beauty Watergardens now has 5-7 inch Sarassas available.

Premium Staple Fish Food

Fish are just like us in many ways, they require healthy food to have healthy bodies. If we humans do not feed our bodies the correct food we suffer through health problems. Fish are the same way, if the eat unhealthy fish food they suffer. They will gain weight and lose their pretty body shapes. Instead they will have round bellies and small heads, thus looking improperly proportioned.  Notice what DR. Erik Johnson, a koi vet, says about fish food, "Very commonly, if you feed your fish nothing other than low quality, corn based diets and or catfish chow as their sole dietary intake, you will begin to notice some fish that develop massively fat bellies, as if bloating, but their scale will NOT be standing out from the body. Eventually, these fish are debilitated from normal swimming by their obesity." Nature's Beauty Watergardens only offers fish food that will provide your fish with healthy meals. All of the fish food available at NBWG is Aquascape Fish Food, a reputable source.  To find out more information about Aquacape Fish Food go to this link Improved Aquascape Fish Food .

Keeping Your Fish Cool

It seems like we are finally reaching the dog days of summer where the heat is so bad you feel like you are walking into an oven. With these high temps you have to keep your outdoor fish cool. But how can you do so when it is 90+ degrees outside? One way you can do so is to provide shade for fish. Your fish need shade not only because it lowers the temperature of the water but it also can help prevent the fish from getting a sunburn. Hold up, fish can get sunburns? Yes, as surprising as it is fish can get sunburns just like humans. Although the water usually serves as a protective barrier for the fish sometimes different UV wavelenths- what causes those evil sunburns- can penetrate the water's surface and zap your fish with those torturous burns. Instead of red burn spots like we humans get, fish get skin spots. These skin spots turn white, then a creamy color, and lastly into pink ulcers. In severe cases these open sores can cause your fish's death. So, what can you do? Rubbing sunscreen all over your fish seems a little too difficult! The solution is easy, just provide shade for your fish. A great way to do so it adding tropical waterlilies to your water garden. Not only do they fill in the order of providing shade but they are also beautiful. Some tropical waterlilies even have molten leaves. Nature's Beauty Watergardens now has a large supply of these colorful plants. Another great way to provide the life-saving shade for your fish is floating water plants. These plants, as talked about in previous articles, float on the water's surface with their roots dangling directly in the water. An added bonus with these plants is that since the root s are in the water they serve as great filters for your water feature. Nature's Beauty Watergardens has a large supply of water lettuce (which has small, delicate white flowers) and water hyacinth (which have beautiful purple flowers).

And, as you get to know them, you will realize that each fish has a different personality. You may have a koi that wants all the attention and is very playful or you may have a koi that is very shy. These fish make amazing pets because of their individual characteristics.  They are truly a family fish.

Underwater Lights

Imagine sinking into your favorite Adirondack chair and propping your feet up by the pond as the sun slowly disappears below the horizon. Without having to peel yourself from the chair to flip a switch, your pond takes on a new life as the twinkle of lights behind the waterfall pop on. You catch a glimmer of koi dancing around light beams under the pond’s surface. With today’s busy lifestyle, it can be difficult to enjoy your pond during the day. Underwater lights create a whole new experience by your pond after the sun goes down. And if you opt for LED lights, you’ll save on energy costs while lengthening your hours of pond enjoyment.*
