Plants
Well we are still deep in the oh so joyous summer heat so now is the time to provide your fish with much needed shade. If your water garden is in direct sunlight, the water may get excessively warm, sticking your fish in the Sahara Desert. But don't worry, this is an easily solvable problem. All you must do is add some plants to your water garden. We have many large leaved tropical water lilies and lotus (aka sun umbrellas). Floating plants, such as water hyacinth and water lettuce, can also help provide the much needed shade for your fish. They also relieve the water from excess nutrients, helping clarify your water. Quick tip: if you have a skimmer and your floating plants are constantly getting caught in it, stick your floaters in a hula hoop. Just make sure it isn't a heavy hula hoop, otherwise it will be the Titanic all over again.

Ponds
Another problem this extreme heat is causing is the lack of oxygen in our ponds. High temperatures can make oxygen levels go down. This is very bad for your fish because they need this oxygen to breathe. In extreme cases fish can even die because of low oxygen levels. But don't worry, this is an easy fix. Good flowing waterfalls add oxygen to the pond, along with fountain pumps, and pond aerators.

Plants
Notice the beautiful center
Everybody wants their water garden to look as beautiful as possible and adding a Lotus to your water garden can do just that. They have huge, bursting blooms that instantly become the star of your water feature. Hidden inside those blooms are the true gems of these plants-the flower core. The cup shaped core holds the seeds and is a vibrant yellow. The flowers are held high on tall stems, above the leaves. These medium green leaves truly are a beauty themselves with their waxy finish. Because of this finish gorgeous water droplets can form on the leaves. Come by Nature's Beauty Watergardens to see these water lotus in full bloom.

 Fish
Last week we talked about butterfly koi but let's go back to the original beauts. Koi can add so much color to your water garden. Their vibrant color schemes bring out the best in any water garden. They also make great pets. According to many koi owners, each koi has its own personality. Some are very outgoing and always want the attention, while others are more shy and hide behind the big guys. Feeding them is always a fun experience because you get to watch these personalities on high. Another added plus, koi are the easiest pets out there. They don't beg to go on a walk or need the litter box changed; they stay in one place-the pond. Koi truly are the gem to your water feature.

Ponds
Well here it comes, the dog days of summer are rolling in. Is it just me or does everybody feel like Missouri's July and August are the worst part of summer? The temperatures make you feel like you are in a sauna. So what about your poor fish that are stuck outside all summer long? Well the best thing you can do for them is provide shade. Imagine if you had to stand outside in the blazing sun all day. One great shade provider is plants. The foliage from these plants act as umbrellas for your fish. But nobody wants a little tiny umbrella, you want the biggest one you can hold. So what about your plants? How can you make them bigger? An amazing way to stimulate growth is with fertilizer tabs. The nutrients in fertilizer tabs help increase the plants ability to grow more stems and leaves, so basically the ability to get bigger and provide your fish with the shade they long for, plus it brings on many more blooms.
