As many of us are here, smack dab in the middle of the United States during the hottest times of summer, a lot of us would love to be in the beautiful, bright tropics, bathing in sunlight (myself included).  Well the best we can really get is to bring a little bit of the tropics to our backyard and these cannas will do just that. They have huge, beautiful leaves that can be a yellow-green, deep green, or a pure maroon red. Their flowers make you feel like you stepped into Hawaii. The colors vary from a bright canary yellow, deep sunset orange, to a crimson red. These flowers will start to bloom in midsummer and will continue up until frost. These plants usually grow form 2-4 feet in height but may get larger. Come to Nature's Beauty Watergardens to get your little piece of the tropics.

Keeping Your Fish Cool

It seems like we are finally reaching the dog days of summer where the heat is so bad you feel like you are walking into an oven. With these high temps you have to keep your outdoor fish cool. But how can you do so when it is 90+ degrees outside? One way you can do so is to provide shade for fish. Your fish need shade not only because it lowers the temperature of the water but it also can help prevent the fish from getting a sunburn. Hold up, fish can get sunburns? Yes, as surprising as it is fish can get sunburns just like humans. Although the water usually serves as a protective barrier for the fish sometimes different UV wavelenths- what causes those evil sunburns- can penetrate the water's surface and zap your fish with those torturous burns. Instead of red burn spots like we humans get, fish get skin spots. These skin spots turn white, then a creamy color, and lastly into pink ulcers. In severe cases these open sores can cause your fish's death. So, what can you do? Rubbing sunscreen all over your fish seems a little too difficult! The solution is easy, just provide shade for your fish. A great way to do so it adding tropical waterlilies to your water garden. Not only do they fill in the order of providing shade but they are also beautiful. Some tropical waterlilies even have molten leaves. Nature's Beauty Watergardens now has a large supply of these colorful plants. Another great way to provide the life-saving shade for your fish is floating water plants. These plants, as talked about in previous articles, float on the water's surface with their roots dangling directly in the water. An added bonus with these plants is that since the root s are in the water they serve as great filters for your water feature. Nature's Beauty Watergardens has a large supply of water lettuce (which has small, delicate white flowers) and water hyacinth (which have beautiful purple flowers).

And, as you get to know them, you will realize that each fish has a different personality. You may have a koi that wants all the attention and is very playful or you may have a koi that is very shy. These fish make amazing pets because of their individual characteristics.  They are truly a family fish.

Underwater Lights

Imagine sinking into your favorite Adirondack chair and propping your feet up by the pond as the sun slowly disappears below the horizon. Without having to peel yourself from the chair to flip a switch, your pond takes on a new life as the twinkle of lights behind the waterfall pop on. You catch a glimmer of koi dancing around light beams under the pond’s surface. With today’s busy lifestyle, it can be difficult to enjoy your pond during the day. Underwater lights create a whole new experience by your pond after the sun goes down. And if you opt for LED lights, you’ll save on energy costs while lengthening your hours of pond enjoyment.*

Ruby Red Comets

The Standard Orange Comet is the most known of all fish in a water garden, however with selective breeding other colors are now available. One we now carry is called the Ruby Red Comet. As the name implies its color is a deep, gem-like red, not the orange of the standard comet. Come and see our new supply of these bright fish. See how they compliment other pond fish such as the yellow comets, shubunkins, and the sarassa (orange & white) comets. They also mix well with koi and butterfly koi.

Sludge & Filter Cleaner

With all the extra rain we have been getting, many people have been getting extra sediment washing into their pond. Is there any solution? Aquascape carries a Sludge & Filter Cleaner that contains five strands of heterotrophic bacteria which helps break down sludge.  This combination of natural cleaners helps to maintain a strong biological balance in your pond while quickly cleaning between rocks, gravel and keeping filter pads from becoming quickly clogged. Because ornamental water gardens are enclosed ecosystems, sometimes factors like fish load, uneaten fish food, organics such as leaves, sludge and unwanted debris may disrupt the balance. Aquascape sludge cleaner maintains a strong biological balance; providing clean, clear and healthy water conditions.*

They have the same color markings and size (can grow up to 2 feet in length) of standard koi but have the added beauty of long flowing fins. It can be planted in soil with 4 inches of water or it can float in deeper water. It will grow to a height of 6-12 inches and a spread of 12 inches to several feet.
Watercress has white four-petal flowers that bloom in the spring and early summer.Interestingly, it is known to be evergreen, and will stay green even in ice.
