With Spring here, water garden cleanouts are at full speed.  You can still schedule your water feature to be cleaned by calling 660-229-3777.  Clean ponds ensure healthier fish and fresher ecosystems. You should be able to enjoy your pond, not smell it.

They both eat algae. Come in and choose your new pond members before they get picked over.

Don't wait too late for getting your water garden ready for the winter ahead!  As leaves and temperatures drop, a little preparation now for your pond will help save your fish and plants lives.
What to do for your water plants:

If you have any tropical water lilies, you may choose to try to winterize them indoors.  Such as: putting them in a large heated and well lit (14hrs/day with at least 1500 foot candles) aquarium.

Or, you can try removing the lily from the pond before the first frost. let the lily go dry in a cool dark place for a few weeks.  Cut off the dead foliage and flowers after soil is mainly dry and remove the nut-like tuber and wash clean.  Then, put the tuber in damp but not wet sand or peat moss in a plastic container with a lid with a few holes poke in the lid for air circulation and keep the container in a cool, dark place(55-60 degrees).  Watch for rotting.  Then next early summer, repot and place in your warm(70 degree) pond.  Or many just choose to treat as an annual flower and replace them with a new one from Nature's Beauty Water Gardens next spring.

Many tropical marginal plants can be winterized too, like cannas and taros.  Tubers or bulbs can be stored in peat moss in a cool, dry, dark place.  Some like palms, can even grow as a house plant in a sunny room indoors with their feet wet in a saucer of water.  Hardy lilies will return next year if the tuber is well under the ice all winter.  Trim leaves off of hardy marginals to just above the water level and they will usually grow back in spring.

     Your fish need to get ready to hibernate for the winter.  At 65 to 55 degree water temperature, feed a cold water fish food that is low in protein and high in wheat germ content.  Then quit feeding altogether when the water temperature is consistently below 55 degrees.  Feeding during the winter in not advised as it can cause very bad digestive problems because the stomach bacteria in the koi or goldfish has gone dormant. 

Keep as many leaves out of your pond as you can, as excessive gasses can overwhelm your fish, causing death.  Leaf netting helps tremendously, maintaining your skimmer, using special cold water bacteria (since the normal bacteria goes dormant in cold temperatures).  Keeping an opening in the ice during the winter also helps tremendously.  Accomplished with a fountain bubbler, pond aereator, floating heater or a combination of these.  We have these items available at our store, now open Fridays 9 to 5, Sat. 11 to 5.

Prepare your water garden for fall and winter.

We love the changes that fall brings, the cooler temperatures, beautiful leaves, ripening fruits and vegetables.  But remember, the beautiful leaves come down and into your water garden creating some challenges in caring for your pond.  Attending to skimmers very frequently and pulling out leaves can be very labor intensive.  We though, have pond netting to solve the problem, in 7' x 10', 14' x 20', and 28' x 30' that you can stretch across you pond.  Normal dry bacteria becomes less effective in cooler temperatures.  We have special cold water bacteria that helps with added debris in your pond this time of year.  For you fish, low temperature fish food aids in digestion, getting them ready for winter.  

     And what about winter.  Are you prepared.  Aerators to create bubbles that not only oxygenate, but help keep a small hole in the ice. we carry two sizes.  Also pond deicers and floating heaters.   If you need help setting things up we can assist as we do many fall netting and even fall cleanout if desired.  If you have a fall project in mind, such as a pond or pondless waterfall, we are still are constructing till winter hits and, who knows, maybe a mild winter can let us build later.  Just call for assistance: 660-229- 3777 for Steve.  Or come by the Store at 372 w.        Plants are critical to the balance of each water feature. Several times a week customers ask what they can do to help clean their pond's green water. When we ask about their pond plants--there aren't any. For this reason the plant choice in this newsletter is the water hyacinth. This floating plant provides quick shade and protection for ponds. The dangling roots draw nutrients out of the water that are otherwise sustaining the green algae. Increase the plants, decrease the green algae.

   For good water quality, your water garden should be filtered. Debris blown in by trees, mowing, or otherwise can cause a issue, it can even cause the death of your fish. It is important to have the proper pumps circulating the water, as well as mechanical and biological filtration. Autumn

Fall Changes

We hope you have enjoyed your water features this summer.  Hopefully it has provided a place to relax, gather with friends and family and a place to learn. 

Cooler weather means changes in the water garden.  Gradually, most marginal and lilies will be heading toward winter dormancy.  Simply cut these back when the foliage browns.  Be careful with your lotus not to cut stems back below water level while still green as this can lead to fungal and bacterial damage to the root tubers.  Tropical lilies and tropical marginals are grown like annuals--they can't handle the cold winters and almost always die before spring.  After frost simply remove them from the garden.  This is the case with floaters like hyacinths and water lettuce as well.  These floaters provide great filtration and shade through their growing season so they are valuable.  Watch as they spread, that they don't create dams in your falls and cause you to loose water.

Your fish will slow down to hibernation by the time the water reaches 50 degrees.  Feeding food with lower protein, like Aquascape's Premium Cold Water Fish Food Pellets is healthier for your fish's digestion up until that time.  Then they will do best with out feeding until the water temperature rises again in spring.

With the ever changing color and movement of our water gardens, there is still plenty of time to enjoy your water gardens.

Fall Maintenance

Fall is a great time to add a few improvements to your water garden area.  Will adding underwater lighting  (like this Aquascape photo illustrates)  allow you to enjoy your water feature longer with the shorter days ahead?  A new patio built up close to your feature may be in order, or a fire pit.                                      



After working with your water feature all summer, you may have in mind a few adjustments to your water garden itself--more falls, a larger pond, better filtration.  Call Nature's Beauty Watergardens if you live in our area for help.  It is way easier to find Steve and the crew available in the fall rather than in spring during clean outs.

Netting the water garden before leaves start falling will cut down on spring maintenance and keep water healthier.  To help maintain water quality through the cold season, don't forget Cold Water Beneficial Bacteria as well.

Fish

Now that the heat has subsided and the water temperature is still moderate, it is a good time to add fish to your water pond.  Nature's Beauty Watergardens shop has a variety of fish to choose from--koi, butterfly koi, yellow, orange and white comets, we have two Chinese shubunkins left, several apricot blushings and American shubunkins.
