Yellow Comets

Tropical Water Lily

Tropical water lilies can come in almost every color of the rainbow. They add color, beauty, shade, and serve as filters for your ponds. They get their name because they usually live only in the summer temperatures. Many people wonder, if they die in the winter why not just get hardy water lilies? The book The Hobbyist's Guide To Pond Plants brings out 9 reasons why.

• They are available in all the same colors as hardies, but also include blues, purples, and violets...exceedingly rare colors in the entire water plant spectrum.
• They are intensely fragrant with a pleasing and pervasive aroma, which immediately causes anyone standing within a few feet of them to be caught up to olfactory heaven.

Hi Fin Banded Sharks Are Here!

Hi Fin Banded Sharks

We now have Hi Fin Banded Sharks available. These fish are originally from the Yangtze River in China. Hi Fin Banded Sharks are algae eaters and can reach 3 feet in length. The young sharks possess bands on their sides. They also have a large triangular dorsal fin. Hi Fin Banded Sharks are not related to typical sharks and their only similarity is the fact that they are both fish. These fish are very peaceful and many Hi Fin Banded Shark owners describe their swimming manner as clown-like and playful. These fish make great pets. 

Lizard Tail  

Lizard Tail (Saururus cernuus) is perfect for water gardens with its beautiful white flowers. It creates a great backdrop for smaller water plants. It is called Lizard Tail because its flowers curl and their ends are green, thus they look like a lizard's tail. This water plant has arrow shaped leaves. The flowers bloom for about 1 month in early summer. The plant usually grow 12-36 inches tall. Lizard Tail is a perennial so it will come back year after year, which makes it a great choice for your water garden.

 Water Lettuce

Water lettuce is a type of floating aquatic plant and is very similar to the water hyacinth that we discussed last week. Water lettuce look exactly as the name describes, a head of lettuce. Their leaves, however, are very light and almost foamy. If you look very carefully you will be able to see the small white flowers at the base of the plant. Water lettuce are also very good filter feeders for your water feature and provide much needed shade in these hot summer months.

Summer

You're ready to splash into summer but are your fish ready? With these helpful tips from Aquascape Inc. your fish can enjoy summer too.


Tip 1: Warm water has a low capacity for holding oxygen so you can add oxygen to your pond by placing an aerator or AquaForce® pump in your pond. You can also install a fountain with a pump if your pond doesn’t have a waterfall or stream built in.


Tip 2: If you feed your fish, feed them in the morning and be careful not to overfeed. Uneaten food decays faster in warmer water and can pollute the pond.


Tip 3: Be sure to remove dying leaves and flowers before they have a chance to decay in the warmer water.


Tip 4: Be extra cautious when using algaecides in warmer temperatures as the sudden death of algae will consume a large amount of available oxygen.

Water Hyacinth

A great way to protect your fish from the sunlight is to provide the fish with the shade from floating plants. Hyacinths are an amazing floating water plant to do this. Their roots dangle in the water absorbing nutrients from the water. Because of this they work as excellent filters. Since they remove nutrients straight from the water instead of lower down where the majority of water plants are located they provide a more substantial filtering.

Sarassas

Sarassas have the shape of a comets but have beautiful red and white coloring. They usually grow up to 6 to 7 inches long. Sarassas are sometimes called the poor man's koi.

Don't wait too late for getting your water garden ready for the winter ahead!  As leaves and temperatures drop, a little preparation now for your pond will help save your fish and plants lives.
What to do for your water plants:

If you have any tropical water lilies, you may choose to try to winterize them indoors.  Such as: putting them in a large heated and well lit (14hrs/day with at least 1500 foot candles) aquarium.

Or, you can try removing the lily from the pond before the first frost. let the lily go dry in a cool dark place for a few weeks.  Cut off the dead foliage and flowers after soil is mainly dry and remove the nut-like tuber and wash clean.  Then, put the tuber in damp but not wet sand or peat moss in a plastic container with a lid with a few holes poke in the lid for air circulation and keep the container in a cool, dark place(55-60 degrees).  Watch for rotting.  Then next early summer, repot and place in your warm(70 degree) pond.  Or many just choose to treat as an annual flower and replace them with a new one from Nature's Beauty Water Gardens next spring.

Many tropical marginal plants can be winterized too, like cannas and taros.  Tubers or bulbs can be stored in peat moss in a cool, dry, dark place.  Some like palms, can even grow as a house plant in a sunny room indoors with their feet wet in a saucer of water.  Hardy lilies will return next year if the tuber is well under the ice all winter.  Trim leaves off of hardy marginals to just above the water level and they will usually grow back in spring.

     Your fish need to get ready to hibernate for the winter.  At 65 to 55 degree water temperature, feed a cold water fish food that is low in protein and high in wheat germ content.  Then quit feeding altogether when the water temperature is consistently below 55 degrees.  Feeding during the winter in not advised as it can cause very bad digestive problems because the stomach bacteria in the koi or goldfish has gone dormant. 

Keep as many leaves out of your pond as you can, as excessive gasses can overwhelm your fish, causing death.  Leaf netting helps tremendously, maintaining your skimmer, using special cold water bacteria (since the normal bacteria goes dormant in cold temperatures).  Keeping an opening in the ice during the winter also helps tremendously.  Accomplished with a fountain bubbler, pond aereator, floating heater or a combination of these.  We have these items available at our store, now open Fridays 9 to 5, Sat. 11 to 5.

Prepare your water garden for fall and winter.

We love the changes that fall brings, the cooler temperatures, beautiful leaves, ripening fruits and vegetables.  But remember, the beautiful leaves come down and into your water garden creating some challenges in caring for your pond.  Attending to skimmers very frequently and pulling out leaves can be very labor intensive.  We though, have pond netting to solve the problem, in 7' x 10', 14' x 20', and 28' x 30' that you can stretch across you pond.  Normal dry bacteria becomes less effective in cooler temperatures.  We have special cold water bacteria that helps with added debris in your pond this time of year.  For you fish, low temperature fish food aids in digestion, getting them ready for winter.  

     And what about winter.  Are you prepared.  Aerators to create bubbles that not only oxygenate, but help keep a small hole in the ice. we carry two sizes.  Also pond deicers and floating heaters.   If you need help setting things up we can assist as we do many fall netting and even fall cleanout if desired.  If you have a fall project in mind, such as a pond or pondless waterfall, we are still are constructing till winter hits and, who knows, maybe a mild winter can let us build later.  Just call for assistance: 660-229- 3777 for Steve.  Or come by the Store at 372 w.
