NEW Store Hours: Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 12pm-5pm        660-229-3777

This Friday (29th) we will be open from 9am-3pm and will be closed on Saturday (30th), sorry for any inconvenience

Pond:

It is finally fall! The weather is getting a little bit cooler (slowly, I know) and leaves are starting to fall....right into your pond. Fallen leaves can cause your clear water that you worked so hard to achieve to become a muddy brown and creates harmful living conditions for your fish. The best way to deal with fall leaves is to prevent it in the first hand by installing a net over your pond. Nets block leaves and debris from getting into your water garden while still allowing you to enjoy your fish and the beautiful of your water garden.

Fish:

While it may be fall and the weather is finally getting a bit cooler, the water in your pond is still war. This means that, for the time being, you should be feeding your fish regular fish food. Store our cold water fish food in the garage until it gets a bit chillier. This will ensure that your fish are getting the ample nutrients they need for the environment they are currently in. And, due to the warm water in your pond, you can still add fish, while keeping them comfortable. We all know that fish are the true jewels of any water garden!

This is a prime example of what you don't want your water garden to look like

Is Your Pond Ready for Fish?

NBWG Newsletter

372 W College St. Marshall, MO

Store Hours: Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 10:30am-5pm        660-229-3777

Plants:

Could you imagine how miserable the summer heat would be without our wonderful air conditioning? Well your fish do not have AC so the next best thing for them is shade. Tropical water lilies are the perfect provider of shade. Lily pads are virtually parasols for your fish. Fittingly so we will be continuing our feature lily. This week we will focus on the Mr. Martin E. Randig tropical water lily. This lily has a rose colored, semi cup shaped flower. The flower can reach up to 8" across and are very fragrant. Its leaves are heavily mottled, making for a gorgeous lily pad. The leaves typically grow anywhere from 6" to 8" in diameter. This lily is perfect if  you are looking for a soft, delicate lily, and will make a beautiful addition to any water garden.

Fish:

Many think that fish can live anywhere; as long as there is water, they are fine.Well that simply isn't the case. Not all ponds are created equal, so you need to access your water garden to make sure it is fit to become a fish hotel. First thing first, is you pond big enough to hold fish? Most fish need about 10 gallons of water for every inch of there length. Keep in mind that your fish will grow so you'll want to be careful not to overcrowd your fish. If you are not sure how many gallons your water garden holds just ask Steve. Pond depth is also important. You want to have a deep enough pond so that your fish can escape predators, such as a heron or the neighborhood cat. A perfect depth is about 2 to 2 1/2 feet.  Another thing to check is if your pond has direct sunlight. Typically it is preferred to have some sun but if your pond is located in a shady spot there are ways to accommodate your fish too. Sunlight produces vitamins that are beneficial to your fish (such as vitamin D). Most plants need sun to grow, and by having plants the nitrates in the water are reduced. However, if your pond is in the shade, just make sure to get some plants that prefer the shade. If your pond passes the fish fitness test, come by our store to get your new pets!

NBWG Newsletter

NEW Hours: Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 10:30am-5pm        660-229-3777

Plants:

As summer continues, the heat seems almost unbearable. In fact tomorrow is calling for 102 degree temps. So it is quite fitting to feature a water lily this week. They provide great shade for your hot fish, giving them a chance to cool down. We would all choose shade over the blazing sun any day. The tropical lily that we will be featuring this week is the Green Smoke lily. This happens to be my personal favorite of all the tropical lilies. There is something so simple about it yet mesmerizing to look at. Its flowers are a green color with blue engulfing the tips. Each flower seems to have its own coloring, not one identical. Some petals have more blue on them, some more green, and some even seem to have a purple hue about it. The flowers typically grow 4" to 8" across, and the mottled (major bonus) up to 10" in diameter. The Green Smoke lily is not only breath-taking but is also quite fragrant, making your whole pond smell like the delectable floral aroma. This really is plant that inspires awe.

Fish:

Sarasas. One of the most underrated fish out there. They are in the comet family, having the same shape as your typical goldfish. What really makes this fish stand out is their colors. They come in a stark white and red. These colors contrast amazingly, providing you with one showstopper of a fish. They could be amply named the comet 2.0, as they practically are comets but with much more contrasting, bright colors.

Fish:

Koi, the fish that seem to make up the water garden industry. What makes them so special? Koi are some of the most colorful fish out there. And they don't just come in one variety, but a countless array of colors. Koi also are a very hardy fish, making them perfect for water gardens because they can withstand Missouri winters. Koi are actually a colored carp (those ugly brown fish in lakes). They were originally bred in China during the 1820s but the world was not made aware of these colorful varieties of carp until 1914. Since then there have been many more variations bred, thus why there are so many different colors of koi. Koi come to two predominant types: standard fin and butterfly fin. Butterfly koi have long, flowing fins, where as standard fin have shorter fins. Koi are also a type of fish that seems to have more noticeable personalities. Yes, I just said fish have personalities. As you feed your fish they really become your pets and we have customers that swear each fish has their very own personality. Koi are one of the best types of fish for your water garden, and soon you'll realize why we all love them so much.

July 1, 2017 We will be open 10:30am-2:00pm, sorry for any inconvenience

Plants:

Now as was mentioned last week we will be featuring a different tropical water lily each week. This week's feature lily is the Brazos White Tropical Water Lily. This lily has a cup shaped flower that is a stark paper white color. There is nothing worse then having something that is supposed to white and it's not, but this flower truly is a bright florescent white. This lily will shine like the north star on a starry night. What is interesting about this water lily is that it blooms at night. It is perfect for those of you who get home in the evening and just want to relax. Typically it starts to bloom three hours after sundown and remains blooming three hour after sunup. Sometimes it will even stay blooming until noon on days with less sun. The bright white will stand out among your other water plants and will be a focal point to anyone who sees your water garden.

Fish:

Comets. The goldfish you had as a child and always named Bubbles. Comets tend to be one of the most under-rated fish and are typically considered to only come in one color: orange. But comets actually come in a wide variety of colors and can be a gem in your water garden or fish tank. Besides orange they come in white, bronze, yellow, and a mix of colors. Sarassas, a type of comet, are white and red or white and orange. They really draw your eye right to them. One of my favorite fish from my childhood was Lola, a sarassa that had long fins and red lips. Her fins seemed to just glide through the water and her pout resembled red lipstick. Out of all the other varieties of fish she stood out the most to me. So come by our store so you can pick up your very own Lola and create memories with you grandchildren.

Ponds:

We all want that crystal clear water, especially in the peak barbecue time when your guests will be in your backyard to not only enjoy your famous ribs but also gaze upon your water garden. One of the most important basics to have is proper filtration. Notice what Aquascape says about the science of filtration.
"There are two forms of filtration that are critical to maintaining a successful ecosystem pond: mechanical and biological. Through biological and mechanical filtration, the water garden will process a variety of nutrients found in the system, including fish waste, uneaten fish food, leaves and runoff from lawns.
An important role of proper filtration is avoiding high levels of ammonia (a form of nitrogen). High ammonia level can be toxic to fish as well as contribute to prolific algae growth. Biological filtration utilizes nitrogen more than any other nutrient in these systems and therefore plays a crucial role in the success of maintaining a healthy water feature.
So, how does biological filtration work? Biological filtration begins as nitrifying bacteria absorb ammonia and turn nitrites into nitrates. Nitrates are less dangerous and act as excellent fertilizer, as they are absorbed by aquatic plants and algae during their growth processes.
Remaining nitrates are removed from the pond by denitrification, another biological filtration method. This process occurs only in anaerobic areas of the pond (areas without oxygen). One area that experiences minimal water flow and oxygen is below the surface of the gravel at the bottom of the pond. The anaerobic bacteria that live in these areas of the pond turn nitrates into nitrogen gas, which is released into the atmosphere.
There literally needs to be billions of bacteria at work in order for the biological filtration to work successfully to purify the water. These bacteria prefer to anchor themselves to a surface, which is why surface area is so important in constructing a successful ecosystem. More surface area means more bacteria, which maximizes the effectiveness of biological filtration. Surface area in a water feature is provided by filter media (BioBalls™), rocks and gravel. A pond with gravel on the bottom will contain more surface area compared to a pond withe exposed liner at the bottom, providing more space for bacteria to colonize!"
Happy pondering!

Where do we want to be? Tropical paradise. Where are we? Missouri. What do we do to compensate? Make our yards look like tropical paradises. Most tropical paradises tend to include the ocean and as we all know there are many fish in the sea. One of which is the Shubunkin. These fish are a type of goldfish that are multicolored. They almost have a calico look to them, red, black, and sky blue coloring- a perfect addition to your tropical paradise.

Plants:

This month we will be showcasing the different types of tropical water lilies so that you can
familiarize yourself with them and pick out your favorites. If you cannot tell by the name, tropical water lilies make the perfect addition to your tropical paradise of a yard. The feature lily this week is called the Albert Greenburg water lily. The flowers of this water lily are a light orange to rosy pink, almost purple color. These colorful gems can grow 5" to 10" in size and the mottled leaves are 6" to 12". Mottled leaves are a prized treasure when it comes to water lilies and the Albert Greenburg has some of the best in the tropical water lily world. These water lilies are truly like no other and have so many different colors in the flowers that you have to take a second look just to notice them all.

Ponds:

What's one thing you never see on those glorious tropical paradise vacation ads? Algae, especially not string algae. You see all these glamour shots of the ocean, seeing people snorkeling, but never once do you see string algae. And you should not see it in your water garden either. It just ruins the whole tropical paradise vibe you are going for. A great way to get rid of string algae is algaecide. It controls the algae and makes it so that you really can have a backyard paradise.

Remember the times when you would beg your parents for a dog, it was your only wish. You begged and begged but they always said you were not responsible enough to handle the needs of a dog. But finally, after what seemed like years of begging, they bought you a puppy. And then you realized just how much work that puppy really was: bathing, grooming, midnight bathroom breaks, and that dreaded poop scooper. I can tell you from experience, fish are a lot easier than dogs. Koi make the perfect pets. Koi come in a wide variety of bright, vivid colors, often referred to as the prettiest fish for a water garden. They usually grow to 24" or even more! It is also said that each have their own individual personality, truly making superb pets. When you arrive they will swim to the surface of the water, as if they are saying 'feed me, feed me.' Your koi will become the jewel of your water garden!
